"Impossible" Not To Cry...

Last week I was able to catch "The Impossible" before it slipped away quietly in the Theatres here in Taiwan....   it did not get as much attention here, I suppose due to the subject matter...  after all, who wants to be SAD in the midst of the Chinese New Year celebrations...

But I am sooooo very glad I saw it upon my return to Taipei... already not playing in many theatres - as most movies here have a lifespan of 1 week or so only....  seeing it in the BIG SCREEN made the TSUNAMI effects all the more real and devastating....   I swear, I have not cried this much in the first half hour of a film since the Disney Pixar Animation Film, "UP"....   I have read so much heartbreaking stories about the TSUNAMI in 2004 that claimed so many a Vactioners' lives in Thailand...  but seeing all of these on film, based on a Spanish family's real life ordeals from this disaster, was just too much to take in without shedding tears....  and to happen in the midst of the Holiday Season....  Oh what they went through - physically and emotionally.... one would not even want to imagine, really....
(ABOVE PHOTO: The real family the movie is based on.)

The acting were all top notch....  well deserved Oscar Nomination for Naomi Watts...  and Oscar's Biggest Snub and Blunder, in my opinion, is failing to reward novice actor, Tom Holland with a Best Supporting or Best Actor nod...   he truly carried the film...  such a heavy task for a young actor and he did it all....   he made you feel every struggle, every tear, every heartache...   and most of the time without even uttering a single line.... Good thing the critics all over the world were smart enough to single his acting out and rewarded him with Breakthrough Performer of the Year awards....   Big Future in the movies for this boy, that's for sure....  Am already a Fan!
At the end of it all, the movie is a Great Tribute to one's family's flight for survival, to all the lives lost, and the compassion of the Thai People.  MUST SEE FILM!!!

Pondering...

Now and again, something stops me in my tracks and makes me think of my own mortality...   about getting old and falling apart physically and mentally....  and all these thoughts actually adds up to one melancholy day...

"The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young."
-OSCAR WILDE, The Picture of Dorian Gray

I had such a day a couple of days ago....  the day started out pretty much like all my days - up at 7AM...  Coffee while I check and answer emails...  attend to pressing matters for a couple of hours or so...  and then, rush off to the Gym to get a bit of workout before they close up for lunch....  Been doing this for a few years now... and have been going to the same place, San Ming Community Gym...  I have always liked this place....  nice and big...  with lots of different machines to use...  so rain or shine, there is no excuse not to go and get a work out....    Since I have been going here for years, I have pretty much gotten to know the same nice people that comes to the place...  I have seen them go through changes - just as they have seen me, am sure....   not just the ones who goes from thin to buff - but sadly, the ones the gets frailer due to old age....  and I have even seen a few  go through the stages of having had a stroke - mild to severe...

On this particular day, my attention was on this man that I have seen for years, who did have a stroke and is being helped go through rehabilitation by his wife and a caregiver/nurse...  They come to the Gym pretty much everyday, but for some reason or another on this day, I spent so much of my between workout hours staring at them go through the motions...  How the two women have to helped him get on each and every machine...  How with all his might, he tries hard to walk on the treadmill, pedal slowly on the cycling machines... and struggle so much lifting the little weights they give him....

All these got me thinking, what happens if this ever happen to me?  How do I manage?  Who then helps me go through something like this?  Or care for me, for that matter?  Worse, how do I deal with all of these, being the type of person who - for the most part - do not like to depend on anyone else, for anything....  Am more into helping out others, rather than asking for help....  I have gotten used to doing all the job on my own as getting help would just means, troubling another person - and/or making things worse, as am used to doing things my way....  So, if I cannot even get myself to ask for help on everyday matters now, how am I to ask when I get much older and more frail...  :(

For years, I have been told by many people that am too independent...   too much so for my own good....   and on this day, I actually Agreed with their opinions...  got scared for the future... and felt soooooo very sad....
"The complete life, the perfect pattern, includes old age as well as youth and maturity. The beauty of the morning and the radiance of noon are good, but it would be a very silly person who drew the curtains and turned on the light in order to shut out the tranquillity of the evening. Old age has its pleasures, which, though different, are not less than the pleasures of youth."
-W. SOMERSET MAUGHAM, The Summing Up

Well, I know that I should not dwell too much on such matters... that we all get older and somehow manages though... and am sure, in a day or two, with all the work am to face and the Chinese New Year happenings to come, all these sappy thoughts will have subsided and I will be back to my normal self again... just going through the flow of life and being happy with all that there is...  so for now, pls FORGIVE the RANTS of a somewhat crazy man trying to face his inevitable old age....

UNPREPARED

of course!   no matter how I have been, supposedly, preparing myself for this time - I still find myself unprepared and lost....
almost a month now have gone by since I was in Manila last....   the time when I heard from my Mom's lips that" "she had made Peace with the Lord... and that if it's her time already, she is more than prepared..."  words that I said to myself will make me decide to also let go and let nature take it's course with her condition....   in other words, stop with the Cancer medicines that has been prolonging her life....

I had till the 5th of this month, when the pills would have run out....   I was tortured, day in and day out, all the days... trying to decide what to do...   trying to prepare myself even more....  still, am not....  when the time came, I still broke down and sent money to my stepfather for my Mom's meds....
But now, it is truly out of my hands....  been on the phone with them constantly, while am trying to do my work in Taipei....   besides, no matter where I am, my thoughts are always back in the Philippines....  with my Mom....  always on the phone just monitoring her condition from afar....   talking with her just to make her feel she is loved and not sooooo alone....   to assure her that her children, no matter how far away and how busy, still thinks of her and love her in each our own way....
the last few weeks, her condition has been deteriorating...  eating less and less.... and in pain more and more....   and the last few times I have called, not only my stepfather - but my Mom herself had been telling me that she is in soooo much pain and that she cannot take anymore...  in her words: "what medicine can I NOT TAKE anymore - so as to not prolong this suffering..."   words that put me in tears, each and every time....  and put me in a depressed state....  not really having any family to discuss these matters with, am left feeling all alone and lost...
today, when I called, I was told by my stepfather that her right side, where she is affected more by the breast cancer, has finally given in...  no longer can she move her right side... not the arm, not the legs.....  and this sent her into a more depressed stage....   and this idea alone makes me feel so very sad for my Mom....  I can only imagine how even low her morale is....    and it really does not help that no one has visited her since I was there last....  since moving to her new home, no friends or family has come to see her....  a sad fact but something I cannot change - and not from NOT TRYING....  no one even bothers to talk with me about what is going on with her....   so I just accept all these, and just  try to make my Mom not feel so unwanted - as much as I can, however I can....

so now, her cancer meds is good  till about the 20th of May....  she is told that they are there and it is very much up to her if she wants to take them or choose not to - everything up to her and how she feels.....  that all will be just OK with us....  A LIE on my part but am RESPECTFUL of her decision....   no matter how I look at things, no matter how I  tell myself that in the long run she is better off as it means her suffering will be less and shortened - a big part of me is still struggling with the thought...  the thought that her end is getting nearer and nearer....  Selfish on my part, but I do admit that the idea of being Motherless paints such a sad, sad photo in my life....   but one I must ACCEPT and FACE....  not for myself, but for my Mom....

on borrowed time

So am back from another week in Manila....  and as always, am I left Manila with a heavy heart and teary eyes....  more so this time....   as this trip left me with a very hard decision to make...  one that am not even sure I can make....
I arrived in Manila Sunday at the break of dawn...  took a 3 hr nap... got up and did some grocery shopping and headed on to see my Mom...  my cousin, Rounette, Nicole, and Arnold drove me and my groceries....     the minute we arrived, tears were already flowing down on my Mom's cheeks....  and of course, mine soon followed...

My Mom has gotten skinnier again.... and the luster in her eyes have disappeared.... try as she might to muster strength - there is just so much she can do.... and for the most part, she sits, she lays down, she stares, she cries.... all in the same chair she is on....  the same one she has been on she we bought it last Christmas....  though it was doing it's job before in alleviating my Mom's bedsoreness - it has come now to a point, where even here she cannot stand to be on.....  not for too long....
Am told by my stepfather that she has not been eating much the last couple of week's before my arrival...  she just cries from too much pain....  and sleeps, if she is lucky, a total of 6 hrs a day....  most of the time she just stares into space - that is if she is not crying or screaming from the pain....  she asks for her children - but sadly no one is really around....  and though I try to see her as much as I can - there are times that I too, cannot - due to my own obligations here in Taiwan...  work or otherwise....  To this - I feel soooooo GUILTY...  it eats me up most nights....

Anyway, this last trip is killing me emotionally....  am now having to face a decision that I was hoping will never ever have to come....   but has....  to continue giving my Aromassin or not.... shstill takes this pill each day....  the steroids induced Breast Cancer Pills possibly is the  only thing prolonging her life....  making her seem as if she is not sick on the outside, while on the inside, her cancer is falling apart and spreading more severely...   the main lump on her breast that had gotten severe and will never heal, has gotten bigger - increased in size with little ones even surrounding it....  on her back I can feel so much hardness from more lumps trying to come out....   her right side where the original lump is, has gotten so swollen - arm to foot.....   her spinal cord seems to be sooo crooked now - maybe from the position she has been in, that it is even hard for her to keep her head straight....  God only knows what of her other internal parts...

She still refuses to go to the hospital....  it is not for her, she says...  but now and again when the pain is too unbearable we manage to bring her there - just so she can get a shot and drip to keep her calm and puts her to sleep....  the stongest pain killers she has been taking, though taking the maximum numbers each day, at most times fails to do their job and she just writhes in pain....  and there is no other choice but to drag her to the hospital and get her stronger medicine to soothe her pain...

I hate seeing my Mom this way... I always question what we are doing....   how my Mom could stand it all....  and what thoughts runs through her per the condition she is in....   and often, my thoughts are confirmed as my Mom, herself, would tell me how unbearable it is for her knowing she will never heal again....  or be lively again, even lively eough to go to the toilet on her own...   I jusy try to soothe her in any way I can... and hope that the pain will not become even more unbearable....

Anyway to make the long story short, this time around, my Mom told me the following:
-She is in so much pain and cannot stand it anymore...
-Has already told the Lord that she is ready - if the Lord feels that it is her time to go already - then she is in acceptance...
-and Lastly, that at times, she really does not want to take her pills anymore - as she does not want to prolong her suffering....

So what do I do now....   I know before I kept telling myself, I could never stop giving her the pills that prolongs her life - even if I have to Beg, Steal and Borrow for the $$$ I still will find a way to get her the pills.....   That I would only stop if the time comes that she asks me to herself, as she can no longer take the pain and suffering....   and now the time has come, and all I can do is cry....  how do I decide such a thing???   This trip is soooooo unbearable that I could not even get myself to look at my Mom on my last day - afraid of breaking down, afraid to see her in so much pain, and afraid of the decision I have to make.....

I really have no one to turn to but myself... no one else to ask...   not even her husband who is still very much in denial of my Mom's true conditions... and in turn, their son - my half brother, is in denial, as well - I feel.......  when I talk to them, when am even able to - all I get are  blank stares and/or tears...  my older sister, who has always been a strong person,  has offered to take the weight off of me (Thank You, Sis!) - but I cannot get myself to agree....  I feel if I do then it is just basically deciding to stop giving my Mom her meds already....  so it is tearing me apart right now....  I am at a loss....  so scared remembering that back in OCT, when she ran out of the meds and no one told me - only 4 days without the pills and she already looked as if she is on her last breath....  the pills keeps her living on borrowed time...

So how do I decide such a thing?   all these times that am supposed to be getting myself ready is of no help....  it is as if, am hearing about her Cancer for the first time again....   How do I decide to stop giving her the pills and not feel as if I helped her die???  Will i really be relieving her of fering or robbing her of a bit more life here on Earth?  ...here with us?   My Mom has pills till about the first week of May...   so I have till then to make this agonizing decision...   and agonize I will for the next few weeks.....    I know that my GUILT will eat me up - as much as making this decision is torturing me - to a point that it is killing me....

But I know I MUST... for my Mom...

"TERMINAL"

Flying out today for Manila, tonite really as it is another one of those RED EYE Flights... am to see my MOM once more - whose condition, though was not getting better, at least not getting worse....

But yesterday afternoon, all that has changed, I got a message that she was rushed to the Hospital... in so much pain and all... something her regular medication could not even help... this put in in a tailspin as I could not get a hold of anyone - no cel network can connect me... Darn celphone providers! And only this morning, through my cousin's help, that I got to find out the whole story...

We have always known my MOM mush have some kind of Breast Cancer.... something she has accepted and did not want to make an issue out of... it seems to run with the women from my Mom's side of the family.... For her, if it was meant to be the cause of her departure from this world, then so be it... No matter what I say, she insist on not having the LUMPS on her chest looked at.... she lived with it.... and even hide it from us... and I, though it was always in the back of mind and basically in my everyday thoughts, Respected her wishes.... and just prayed and hope it can only get better... or at least, that she will not suffer....

Now the doctor's finding is something we already knew... Cancer, indeed... but now, words like "Last Stage" and "Terminal" are being used... first time for me to hear this in reference to my Mom... and it is scaring the CRAP out of me... and making me feel sooooo HELPLESS! I have seen and dealt with people who had died of cancer in my time... have heard these words before uttered by the doctors... but never, referring to a relative, much more - My Mom!

Saturday, tomorrow, I should be seeing my Mom and the Doctor... will find out more, as to what to expect, what to do, and how to deal... somehow I could not help but feel like a Baby - wanting to retreat from everything and having someone else take care of this matter.... but I know I must be an ADULT about it and face it all, as BEST I could....

♫♪Make You Feel My Love♫♪

When the rain is blowing in your face,
and the whole world is on your case,
I could offer you a warm embrace
to make you feel my love.

When the evening shadows and the stars appear,
and there is no one there to dry your tears,
I could hold you for a million years
to make you feel my love.

I know you haven't made your mi...nd up yet,
but I would never do you wrong.
I've known it from the moment that we met,
no doubt in my mind where you belong.

I'd go hungry; I'd go black and blue,
I'd go crawling down the avenue.
No, there's nothing that I wouldn't do
to make you feel my love.

The storms are raging on the rolling sea
and on the highway of regret.
Though winds of change are throwing wild and free,
you ain't seen nothing like me yet.

I could make you happy, make your dreams come true.
Nothing that I wouldn't do.
Go to the ends of the Earth for you,
to make you feel my love

...what makes me SAD....

I should be HAPPY right? But am not - for these have all EXPIRED!!! Such a WASTE as it is not even easy to accumulate the stickers to begin with... OH WELL... guess, unless you are like me all GA GA for the Premium Toys, such things will not really matter.... oh well...

always something

"...i guess you thought I would've put it all behind me..
but it seems there's always something right there to remind me..."

DEATH

Death has always been a really hard subject to speak about... most people do not even want to UTTER this 5 letter word, much more, think or talk about it... but it really isn't all that bad -- for me anyway... it is all a matter of how we think and deal with it...

Anyway, a few days ago at the GYM, we overheard someone talking about another person's passing.... it seems that this 78 year old man, who swims regularly at the pool close by to us, just finished his laps.... with a smile sat down and rested... as he has done many times over.... and then just did not make up anymore...

Death is just another part of our journey in this life of ours... it's inevitable - it will happen.... so need not fret, nor waste time dwelling on it... instead we all try to just LIVE for however much time we are given in this world...

So it got me thinking -- if I had to go, I would very much like it to be the same way... IMAGINE, even in my OLDER DAYS -- still FIT and EXERCISING.... and to PASS ON right after doing something I like... and with a SMILE on my face - that would be HEAVEN and IDEAL! Now if only we have a say in the matter.....

Carl & Ellie: A LOVE STORY

WARNING: If you have not seen the movie and plan to do so - DO NOT READ ON.

got to see this PIXAR animated movie, UP, and I must say - it had one of the most heartfelt scenes from a LOVE AFFAIR i have seen in a long time.... all the emotions in the first 20 mins of the movie: excitement, love, hope, faith, death, sorrows, letting go - real sappy, subtle so the kids will not be devastated, and very realistic for an Animated film... not to say that the rest of the movie was not good... it was actually great... a JOYFUL RIDE.... and very much entertaining...

it just goes to show ya, everyone comes into our lives for a reason... for however short or long... and we must always embrace them and make the most of the time with them....
Here's the OFFICIAL TRAILER:

weThink, weShare #4 - The Trouble With Love Is...

Just feeling like a SAP once more upon coming back to Taiwan, I decided to watch "Love Actually" again for the GOD only knows how many times now - I have lost count.... still the same bag of mixed emotions I get each and ever sitting... it is one of those movies I truly will never ever tire of... and it seems that each and every viewing - I pick up something I did not before -- as is in this case...

This time around, I got to really listen to the song; "The Trouble With Love Is.." - sung by Kelly Clarkson

The words are hauntingly true.... for me anyway.... I can totally relate.... line by line, I have at one point or another experienced pretty much all that is written in the lyrics.... the good stuff like hearing a symphony and wanting to shout out to the world about my love for someone.... but like a drug, love does make me blind from time to time, as am sure most of you can relate.... so much so that the heart is torn into pieces....

Still, there is no escaping when love beckons.... the minute my heart flutters for someone - like a moth to a flame, am there... wholeheartedly.... cautions thrown in the wind.... no reservations whatsoever.... against everyone else's warnings.... I just go with the flow of things -- doing the BEST I can, making the most of all, hoping for the BEST LOVE has to offer....

So, in this edition of weThink, weShare - I ask of all of you:
What do You Think IS the Trouble With Love? With Falling In Love? And, if you can, would you simply just walk away from it - fearing that, in the end, it all turns out the same
?

...a million miles away....

Here we lay face to face once again
Silence cuts like a knife as we pretend.
And I'm wondering who will be to first
to say what we both know
We're just holding on to could have beens
and we should be letting go.

[Chorus:]
It feels like your a million miles away
as your lying here with me tonight.
I can't even find the words to say
I can find a way to make it right.
And we both know that the story's ending
We play the part but we're just pretending
And I can't hide the tears
cause even though your here
It feels like your a million miles away.

Was it me, or was it you that broke away?
For what we were is like a season Love is change
and every time I think about it
It tears me up inside.
Like the rivers of emotion
but I got no more tears to cry.
[Chorus:]

[Bridge] We can try to talk it over
but we walked that road before
While our song is playing its last note
We both know for sure
that it's time to close that door.
[Chorus:]

Revolutionary Road : Movie Review

Long overdue review...saw this film while I was in Manila a couple of weeks ago but am just getting around to reviewing it now.. not that I have been too busy or too indifferent about the film -- more like, I was totally shaken by it that I had to see it again just to reaffirm all the feelings felt while watching it the first time. Revolutionary Road , I warn you, is not a very joyful film, nor is it easy to watch. But it is a MUST SEE not only if you are fans of the TITANIC duo, but also because the movie is simply entertaining. It achieves what not many films these days do. touches you, questions you, and pull you into the characters' lives.

Sam Mendes' of American Beauty fame strikes GOLD again with his film adaptation of a great American novel - faithful, intelligent, and superbly cast... If I was not a fan of Leonardo then, I sure am now.... He delivered on the acting promise he showed with Blood Diamond...and Kate Winslet, who recently just won an OSCAR is robbed as she should ahve been NOMINATED and WIN for this particular film... certainly one of the most talented actresses of today, Winslet continually surprises us all with her various film outings -- here, she surprises me in a whole other way. Here she is silent, unlikeable, emotionally close to the edge of insanity, sometimes cold, and all very human portrayal of April Wheeler is one of the best performances of the decade by her, or by anyone. Truly deserving of an Oscar.

This film truly benefits from the amazing direction by Sam Mendes. He comes back with strong, after American Beauty, with this project. The writing is sooo top notch, with both of the main characters, Frank and April Wheeler, so open, so alive -- such 3-dimensional characters. The film let us inside their lives, and it does so with great passion. The film itself is so beautiful, so alive, yet at the same time, so dark to what the film is about. Even the music, the original score, is so unsettling, perfectly balanced to what each scene brought.

Revolutionary Road is not a film for everyone. I can definitely see some audiences hating it, especially those who love to see happy endings, but it should certainly be respected -- for its ambition, for the things it accomplishes and every thing it portrays. This could very well be Sam Mendes' major masterpiece... and one that will forever be embedded in the minds of those who gets to see the film.

7 Quotes on CHANGE:

========================

We do not succeed in changing things according to our desire, but gradually our desire changes.
- Marcel Proust

All love shifts and changes. I don't know if you can be wholeheartedly in love all the time.
- Julie Andrews

Our days are a kaleidoscope. Every instant a change takes place. ... New harmonies, new contrasts, new combinations of every sort. ... The most familiar people stand each moment in some new relation to each other, to their work, to surrounding objects.
- Henry Ward Beecher

The one unchangeable certainty is that nothing is certain or unchangeable.
- John F. Kennedy

All is change; all yields its place and goes.
- Euripides

For good and evil, man is a free creative spirit. This produces the very queer world we live in, a world in continuous creation and therefore continuous change and insecurity.
- Joyce Cary

One must never lose time in vainly regretting the past or in complaining against the changes which cause us discomfort,
for change is the essence of life.

Jaded??? Me???

"And I feel bare naked
And I just can't take it
I'm getting jaded
No I just can't fake it anymore
'Cuz I'm bare naked
And I know life's what you make it
Wish I could float away
to some other day "
-Bare Naked - Jennifer Love Hewitt

as much as I hated being down with a bit of a stomach flu a couple of weekends ago - I was HAPPY about one thing.... with nothing much that I was able to do as I was basically bedridden - most of the time, I just listened to my iPod and just let all the songs play... then I got to this Jennifer Love Hewitt song from a few years back, Bare Naked.... I remember liking the song when it came out... and still feel the same way about it each and everytime I hear it...

Since I had nothing else preoccupying my thoughts while listening, I was able to really hear the lyrics once more.... sparked by the song - the mind wanders... and I start analyzing some recent comments about me by a couple of friends while discussing matters of the heart.... the one that sticks out like a sore eye is: "Rudi -- as you get older, you get more and more jaded!"

YOWZA!!!

"Me! Jaded!"
I certainly hope not.... I tend to think of myself as someone who is still very optimistic in life.... passionate and actually tend to romanticized a lot of things... heck, why else am I crushing all the time.... I think that sometimes when I speak, people mistake my comments, coming from my realistic side, as one coming from a very jaded point of view...

yeah yeah, I have had my share of relationships -- both good and bad.... and I too have been hurt to a point that I should have given up on love... but it is just not the way I am.... just because I tend to just let life roll along and go with the flow, does not mean I have given up and just living day to day to day....

I still believe in LOVE and all that it comes with: hope, promises, happiness, sorrow, pain. And I still do CRAVE it with PASSION!
